What is phishing, smishing and vishing?

Phishing, smishing, and vishing are social engineering attacks designed to trick people into revealing sensitive information or making payments.

Phishing - email

Fraudulent emails that appear to come from trusted organisations. They often:

  • Ask you to click a link

  • Request login or payment details

  • Warn of account suspension or unusual activity

Smishing - SMS/text messages

Scam text messages that:

  • Claim there’s a problem with your account

  • Include shortened or suspicious links

  • Ask you to reply with personal information

Vishing - phone calls

Phone scams where fraudsters impersonate:

  • Banks or payment providers

  • Government bodies

  • IT or security teams

They may ask for one-time passcodes, passwords, or payments.

How to stay safe

  • Never share passwords or one-time passcodes

  • Don’t click links from unexpected messages

  • Verify requests using official contact details

  • Be cautious of urgent or threatening language

Legitimate providers will never pressure you into acting immediately or ask for full security details.
